TutorMoments: Do AI tutors know when to help and when to hold back?
AllenAI introduces TutorMoments, a framework that evaluates whether language models can balance helping students with pushing them to think harder, using real tutoring transcripts annotated by experienced math teachers. The key finding is that models tend to over-help by default, and even with explicit prompting they still fall short of human tutors in adapting to the moment, which gives faculty a concrete way to explain why AI is not a substitute for skilled teaching.

This is where a research group checks whether a model will run on hardware it already owns and whether the licence permits the intended use, which matters for any project that cannot send its data to a commercial service. The dataset and fine-tuning write-ups carry the methodological detail secondary coverage omits.
