Generative AI in Academic Writing

Readers will be able to experiment with generative AI for academic writing tasks such as brainstorming topics, generating and comparing outlines, modelling unfamiliar genres like literature reviews or abstracts, summarising long texts, sentence-level editing, translation and routine academic emails, while refining prompts with goal, context and constraints. They will be able to weigh the pitfalls the handout details, including fabricated facts and invented citations, bias, academic-integrity risk, privacy of anything typed into a prompt, and unapproved changes to meaning, and to check the relevant instructor or course policy before using any AI-generated text. Faculty and administrators can also use the handout to think through how AI use is authorised in their own courses, since it stresses consulting syllabus policies and the principle that tools should help students think and write, not think or write for them.
