Copyrights and AI

This free FAQ from Utrecht University helps teachers decide which AI platforms are safe for copyright-protected material, what they may upload to UU-approved tools such as EduGenAI and UU Chat, and when they should link to publisher sources via DOI instead of uploading chapters, articles or figures. It sets out the concrete limits of the Dutch educational exception (up to 40 pages and 20% of a work, with separate quotas for images), how to request additional permission through the UvO portal, and why current EU law denies copyright protection to unedited GenAI output. Readers also come away able to judge when the DSM Directive's text and data mining exceptions in Articles 3 and 4 allow feeding lawfully accessed subscription content to AI tools for research.
