Academic Writing: Responsible Use of AI
University of Pretoria library staff explain what generative AI can and cannot do in academic work and provide a five-question checklist readers can work through before using an AI tool on any assessed task. The page includes ready-to-adapt APA 7th citation formats for ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini, a model AI disclosure statement, and concrete examples separating acceptable uses such as brainstorming and grammar checking from misconduct such as paraphrasing sources or citing unverified AI references. Faculty can also use the boundary-zone cases — translation, AI summaries of sources, AI-assisted data analysis — to frame module-level AI rules of their own.
