A Tutorial on Teaching Data Analytics with Generative AI
In this free tutorial, Robert L. Bray of Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management shows instructors how to build generative AI into data analytics courses through techniques such as topic-specific custom GPTs, problem sets submitted as chat logs of the student working with an assistant, and section-specific labs where each section builds an AI helper for the others. Readers come away able to redesign assignments so that a generic chatbot cannot complete them, for example by requiring students to critique AI-generated answers, document where they used AI, or defend their analysis in live or oral exercises. The tutorial's practical guidance on setting transparent rules and teaching students that models hallucinate and need verification should help instructors decide where AI supports learning and where it would undermine it.
